This pleasing portrait of a young man is painted by an artist of whom, as yet, no record has been found. Probably a provincial artist he is aware of, and influenced by, the work of the fashionable Court portraitist Sir Godfrey Kneller.
The sitter, traditionally identified as Thomas Lee, possibly Sir Thomas Lee, is dressed 'a la mode' and very expensively, his silver lace and feathered hat a reflection of French fashion of the time.
Sir Thomas Lee, 3rd baronet, son of another Sir Thomas and Alice Hopkins, died in 1740, having married Elizabeth Sandys. They had one child, Anne.
